What to Look For

Here are some signs to look for when trying to spot movie thieves:

WHEN DO CAMCORDER PIRATES STRIKE?

• Opening day, opening show, big blockbusters. The earlier in the film release period, the more valuable a film is to movie thieves. Always be alert, but pay particular attention during new release periods.
• First showing, last showing. Movie thieves think they are anonymous in uncrowded theaters. They aren't!

HOW CAN I SPOT CAMCORDER PIRATES?

• Suspect Seating Arrangements — Movie thieves try to place themselves in the middle or upper corners of the theater, and they will often try to shield themselves by having accomplices sit on either side. Please remain alert.
• Glowing Lights — Most camcorders have red or green lights that blink while recording. Watch for them.
• Assisted Listening Devices — Some movie thieves plug their video-cameras into the assisted listening device jack in their armrest to obtain better sound quality.
• Coats in the Summer — If someone is wearing a long or heavy coat out of season, take a closer look. Camcorders are getting smaller every day.
• "Friends" of Staff — Look for non-employees coming in and out of the projectionist's booth or arriving at odd hours claiming to be a friend of an employee or manager.
• Theater Rentals — Pay attention to individuals who rent the entire theater for a private showing of a new release.
• Suspicious Devices - Often times camcorders attempt to disguise or hide cameras in popcorn or candy boxes that are suspended by home apparatus on the arm rest or within the cup holder.
